Ohanaeze condemns attack on LP meeting in Enugu

Apex socio-cultural organisation, Ndigbo, yesterday, condemned the attack and disruption of the Labour Party () meeting in Enugu State.

A meeting of the was, at the weekend, disrupted at Nomeh, Nkanu East Council of the state by gunmen.

The attack was the third on Enugu LP members in the last two months. The first attack on LP members was in Aninri Council and was shortly followed by the one in Awgu Council.

In all the attacks, gunmen would beat, shoot sporadically and destroy chairs and canopies belonging to members.

Condemning the recent attack, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr Alex Ogbonnia, warned politicians to desist from any action that could disrupt peace in the state.

The statement reads: “It is unthinkable that at a time eminent persons and groups from all over the world are embracing the LP as the embodiment of equity, justice, hope, economic emancipation and inter-ethnic unity in Nigeria, some disgruntled elements are busy disrupting their meetings in the South East.

“We hope that we are speaking to the hearts of many, that it sends a wrong signal about the essence for which the are known.”

Ohanaeze warned that this should be the last time such an incident will be recorded in any part of Igbo land.

Ogbonnia called on traditional rulers, leaders of town unions, community vigilantes and chairmen of councils to live up to their responsibilities.

“In other words, all the security officers at each unit of Igbo administration are, hereby, requested to ensure there will never be a repeat of the such irresponsible and shameful incident in Igbo land.

The Ohanaeze, led by Prof. George Obiozor, reiterates that political parties of all persuasions are free to market their manifestoes and canvass for votes all over the country; but nothing should compel gunmen or the hateful partisans, masquerading as political leaders, to deploy thugs to disrupt or attack political meetings in the South East.
